About author

What Bomsori and Grażyna Bacewicz have in common is not only the instrument and the accolades they won in the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition (an honorary diploma for Bacewicz, who took part in it in 1935 and later served on its jury; 2nd prize to Kim in its 15th edition of 2016), but also their courage and perseverance in the pursuit of artistic perfection.

Bomsori is a regular guest at prestigious festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and Verbier Festival. She was the Focus Artist of the Rheingau Musik Festival in 2021 and, in the same year, began a 5-year residency at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival as Menuhin’s Heritage Artist.

Bomsori has had the privilege of performing under the direction of multiple esteemed conductors, including Fabio Luisi, Jaap van Zweden, Paavo Järvi, Marin Alsop, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Lahav Shani, Vasily Petrenko, Joana Mallwitz, and Anja Bihlmaier, among others.

She has collaborated with numerous leading orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Radio France, Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, Camerata Salzburg, and Basel Chamber Orchestra.

Bomsori has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Musikverein Golden Hall and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Herkulessaal and Prinzregententheater in Munich, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Royal Albert Hall in London, Berlin Philharmonic, Rudolfinum and Smetana Hall in Prague, and Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York.

In addition to winning the 62nd ARD International Music Competition, Bomsori is a prizewinner of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, Queen Elisabeth Competition, International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover, Montreal International Musical Competition, Sendai International Music Competition, and the 15th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. She received the 2018 Young Artist Award from the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Music Association’s 2019 Young Artist Award. In 2020, she was presented with the 4th G.rium Artists Award by the Foundation Academia Platonica.

In June 2021, Bomsori released her first Deutsche Grammophon solo album, *Violin on Stage*, with the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic and Giancarlo Guerrero. Her duo album with pianist Rafał Blechacz, featuring works by Fauré, Debussy, Szymanowski, and Chopin, was released in February 2019 by Deutsche Grammophon. The album won the Fryderyk Music Award for “Best Polish Album Abroad” for their DG recording of French and Polish repertoire. Her recent recording of the Nielsen Violin Concerto with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Fabio Luisi was awarded the Gramophone Award 2024.

Born in South Korea, Bomsori received a Bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University, where she studied with Young Uck Kim. She also earned her Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Sylvia Rosenberg and Ronald Copes. She performs on the Guarnerius del Gesù violin “ex-Moller,” Cremona, 1725, on extended loan through the generous efforts of The Samsung Foundation of Culture of Korea and The Stradivari Society of Chicago, Illinois.

Bomsori Kim plays the main role in the short film about Grażyna Bacewicz’s life. As the composer’s Ambassador, she traces back Bacewicz’s career. She discovers, among others, archive recordings featuring the Polish violinist, studies handwritten notes and comments in the music scores, and meets the artist’s closest family members.

I am greatly honoured to be able to act as ambassador of Grażyna Bacewicz’s music. Discovering her extremely expressive and passionate works is to me like an inspiring journey. During my work on the film and concerts, I have had the opportunity to gain more insights into her artistic vision, and I already know that my journey will abound in more new discoveries. I have a strong bond to Bacewicz. Her determination and independence are very close to my mind, and her works let me express myself fully as an artist and violinist, Bomsori Kim commented.
